Living Life to the Fullest: Age is Just a Number

I have often said "age is just a number." On Sunday, I was involved in a conversation with some ladies about not dressing old.  My late mother didn't believe in dressing her age.  She wasn't going to Emblem Club meetings in go-go boots and mini skirts - Oh Mom, I'm glad you have a sense of humor as I know you'll forgive me for making that statement! While polyester was stylish in the 70s, she moved away from those in the 80s when polyester slacks were perceived as old lady clothing.

However, I had a conversation with my husband the other day about protein shakes.  He told me he couldn't find the ones that I'd had on our Kroger list and went on about how the cost of pre-made protein shakes.  I tried using protein powders but I hated the taste and I had some unpleasant side effects. Anyhow, Jon asked me why instead of Core Power shakes, I don't consider Ensure.  Ensure has a Max Protein variety that would meet my needs for less money.  I admitted to my husband that I avoided Ensure because I thought of it as a brand for old people and I don't consider myself old.

My husband got a good laugh out of my comment about Ensure.  Without missing a beat, he said "Okay, will you consider Boost then?"  After looking at the options in the Kroger app, Boost is on the grocery list for Jon's next trip.

At Steadfast, there is a Crossfit program specifically for 60+ athletes.  Since I work during the day, I don't often get to see these amazing athletes in action.  I have friends from the masters program and I joke that I've got 9 more years before I qualify for the masters classes. During the Crossfit Open earlier this year, I was sitting with some of my more mature female friends and we began talking about why we do Crossfit.  In short, we want to be able to take care of ourselves for as long as possible so our children don't have to take care of us.  I watch my late father's body atrophy after he retired because work kept him active.  It also did not help that he had Alzheimer's and dementia which took hold as he got older. My mom did her best to take care of my dad but it was too much for her so we had to put him into a nursing home.  The physical and mental decline were heartbreaking especially when my dad became bedridden, only getting into a wheelchair to go to meals.  After I got sober and gained a clearer mind, I vowed that I wanted to get active and stay active as I want to be able to take myself to the bathroom as long as possible.

With all of this being said, Ensure Max Protein is something that I will no longer bypass. I need healthy protein sources for menopause and general aging and I've decided if am out and about with a protein shake that happens to be Ensure brand, I really don't care what anyone else thinks.
