Brief Pause on New Content

Dear Followers,

I am going to be taking a little break from publishing new content.  I'm trying to take my advice about slowing down - Why Slowing Down Can Boost Your Happiness

As I mentioned in Open and Honest Life Update, I am experiencing issues with my shoulders.  I am not a doctor but I am seeing a physical therapist for an evaluation but I suspect overtraining. All I know is that even basic tasks like washing my hair hurt. Pending the results of my PT evaluation, I don't expect to stop Crossfit, rather, I expect to be further scaling workouts and perhaps an extended pause on the extra credit work that I have been doing.

If you follow Santini Serenity on Facebook, you will see that I am sharing content from other content creators I've met in the space. I am really enjoying the content from Brave Girl.

I appreciate all of my readers and thank you in advance for your patience while I take a brief pause.

God Bless,

Jodi

Finding Balance: Work, Life, and What Matters Most in 2025

This blog post is a bit different as I am giving an open and honest life update.  I share a lot of scripture and information here that might make it look like I have my life all together.  The truth is that I do not!

I do take time each morning for prayer and scripture with God.  I'm working on learning to trust His Will for me.  I have not been able to figure out what it is as I'm not supposed to figure it out! I'm supposed to let God take the lead and submissively follow.  I'm not good at submissively following.

Last week, I made my return to the Columbus office.  I got down the street and realized I forgot my travel mug so I came back home to get it.  Upon coming out of the garage, I saw I had a headlight out.  I know this is illegal and I don't know when it went out.  If the car can tell me there might be ice on the road why can't it tell me that I have a headlight out?  Anyhow, I took it to Valvoline Instant Oil Change in Lewis Center so it could be be fixed.  The young man tried but he said there was a support bar in his way.

I called my husband on my way home and told him that I felt I had no choice but to go to the local mechanic ER Autocare.  Jon said it is fine.  I told him that he was taking the Jeep over to make sure I got a fair price. Apparently changing a headlight on a Jeep Compass requires removing the front bumper. I'll make a long story short - a walk to Crossfit class and over $300 later, I got my Jeep back.  Jon was sitting in my Jeep when I walked out of the gym.  I motioned for him to get out of the driver's seat. I wanted to pull my Jeep into the garage as I need go around my son's dead SUV that is residing in part of the driveway. I'm grateful that God's Will was not for my Jeep to end up like my son's SUV! Yes, I'm trying to look at the silver lining to my expensive car repair situation.

Our head coach Michael has been programming extra credit to improve our bench press and jump rope skills.  Like most everyone, I've focused on bench press. My friends Kathy, Jodi and Dawn have done extra credit benching with me.  My shoulders felt terrible after Monday's workout. I walked to class but no on my hands!! After work on Tuesday, I went to open gym to do my bench press extra credit. I felt like giving up after benching the 35# bar but I didn't.  I stopped after set 5 of 10 bench presses at 52.5# which I struggled to lift. The soreness was horrible so I doused myself in "Icy Hot" when I got home.  Later on in the evening, I realized that my hands and fingers felt numb.  I woke up a few times during the night feeling tingling and numbness.  I am scheduled to see our gym PT Carlin on Friday for an assessment.  I let Coach Michael and my friends Kathy & Jodi know that I've paused bench press extra credit.

My husband did not know about the numbness in my hands and fingers until Wednesday because he was at a boy scout function all Tuesday night.  I don't know if he would have still brought home dirty dish towels for me to wash if he'd known about the numbness.  For the record, the dish towels are no longer dirty; I just have to fold them and work with Jon to get them returned to the scout church.  Oh, I also have the laundry I did on Tuesday night that remains to be folded.

The week has been particularly challenging due to unexpected work stressors that arose earlier in the week, specifically on Tuesday and Wednesday. These issues have put a strain on my usual workflow and made completing tasks much harder than anticipated. When technology functions as it should, it can be a tremendous asset, making our jobs easier and more efficient. However, when something goes wrong, it can create significant frustration and delays. Unfortunately, this has been my experience lately. Troubleshooting problems and trying to get everything back to normal has been quite difficult and time-consuming. Instead of being able to focus on my work, I find myself stuck dealing with tech issues that take away from my productivity. It’s been a frustrating few days, leaving me eagerly hoping for a smoother path ahead.

As I write this, I am mentally and physically exhausted.  I need God's REST.  During my prayer this morning, I told God that I don't know what His Will is for me but I need his help.  Perhaps His Will was making the PT appointment and taking a break from the bench press extra credit. Is His Will only fixing one part of a two part dashboard? I'm not sure about what one yet but it sure feels like it.

If you made it this far, thank you!  I know this isn't my normal inspirational blog post. I felt a need to "keep it real" so you all know that I am a human being and not some machine cranking out blog material.

Don't Be Shy! Asking Questions Shows Strength

Photo by <a href="https://unsplash.com/@simonesecci?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash">Simone Secci</a> on <a href="https://unsplash.com/photos/red-letters-neon-light-49uySSA678U?utm_content=creditCopyText&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=unsplash">Unsplash</a>
This blog post is a tribute to my late mom, Alta Woodruff, who always said "the only stupid question is the one you didn't ask." She popped into my mind shortly after I sent a text to Coach Michael asking about an upcoming workout. I debated whether or not to ask him but then I remembered what my mom said.

Curiosity is a powerful driver of success. Inquiry is essential inquiry in both learning and innovation. The idea that there are no stupid questions encourages growth and understanding, empowering us to seek knowledge without fear.

Overcoming the Fear of Asking Questions

Many people hesitate to ask questions due to fears of looking foolish or wasting time. Here are effective strategies to combat these anxieties:

  • Shift your mindset: Recognize that asking questions is a sign of strength, not weakness.
  • Practice in a safe space: Start by asking questions in smaller groups before moving to larger settings.
  • Focus on the bigger picture: Remind yourself that one question could lead to significant insights.

The "Beginner's Mind"

Approaching situations with an open mind creates a space for exploration without fear of judgment. When you look at the world with fresh eyes, you invite new ways of thinking and understanding. This attitude is powerful. It leads to wonderful discoveries that you might miss if you only stick to old beliefs.

By adopting a beginner's mindset, you allow yourself to be curious. Curiosity opens doors to fresh ideas and viewpoints. Instead of clinging to what you already know, you embrace the unknown. This openness can change how you view challenges. When faced with a problem, you are more likely to consider all angles. You might find solutions you never expected.

Being open-minded helps you connect with others. When you listen without judgment, people feel safe to share their thoughts. This can deepen conversations and enhance relationships. The more you understand others, the richer your experiences become.

This mindset also encourages growth. Each encounter becomes an opportunity to learn. You may discover new interests or talents that you didn't know you had. By welcoming new perspectives, you expand your knowledge. Your world becomes fuller and more exciting.

Embracing an open mind and a beginner's attitude invites exploration and discovery. These qualities enrich your life and broaden your horizons. They help you see things from various angles and lead to personal growth and connection with others.

Types of Questions

Understanding different question types enhances your inquiry skills. Here are some categories:

  • Open-ended: "What are your thoughts on this?"
  • Closed-ended: "Did you like the presentation?"
  • Clarifying: "Can you explain that part again?"
  • Probing: "Why do you think that happened?"

Each type serves a distinct purpose, guiding conversations toward clarity and insight.   I don't ask the people who live with me "who will be home for dinner on Saturday night?" I will be wondering all day what to make and how much.  I can ease my mind and be adequately prepared by asking a simple question.

Effective Questioning Techniques

To become a skilled questioner, consider these techniques:

  • Active Listening: Show genuine interest in responses to create a two-way dialogue.
  • Thoughtful Phrasing: Choose words carefully to encourage engagement.
  • Non-verbal Cues: Maintain eye contact and use affirming gestures.

The Importance of Follow-up Questions

Asking follow-up questions enhances understanding and engagement in conversations. For example, when someone opens up about a challenge they have faced, you can respond with a simple question like, "What steps did you take to address it?" This type of inquiry serves two important purposes. First, it shows that you care about what they are saying. When you ask questions, it signals that you are genuinely interested in their experience and feelings. This can build trust and make the other person feel valued.

Second, this question encourages the speaker to share more information. By asking about their actions, you invite them to elaborate on their experience. This can lead to a richer, more meaningful conversation. The more details they provide, the more insights you gain about their thought processes and problem-solving strategies. This exchange not only deepens your understanding but also strengthens the connection between you and the speaker.

In conversations, these follow-up questions can transform simple exchanges into more insightful dialogues. When people feel heard and understood, they are more likely to open up. This creates a positive cycle of communication that benefits both parties. By fostering this kind of environment, you can enrich discussions and build stronger relationships.

Cultivating a Culture of Curiosity

Creating an environment where questions are welcomed encourages exploration. Whether in classrooms or workplaces, share tips to foster a curiosity-rich culture:

  • Encourage open discussions where questions are valued.
  • Recognize contributions and follow up on inquiries.
  • Celebrate curiosity as a driver of success.

Utilizing Resources for Answers

To get good info, use reliable sources. Libraries are full of books and resources. Academic journals have expert research. Online courses also give lots of info. Coursera has free courses on many subjects. Khan Academy teaches math, science, and more for free. These places offer trusted facts. Use them to learn new things and build your knowledge. Check that your sources are factual. Good sources help you learn and grow.

Reflecting on Answers

After you have answered your questions, take a moment to think about what you learned. Reflect on the new ideas that came up during this process. Ask yourself how these insights connect to what you already know. This approach helps you identify any new questions that may have popped up. It’s important to stay curious and keep exploring. This ongoing loop of asking and answering questions keeps your learning journey active and engaging. By regularly reflecting, you reinforce what you’ve learned and open doors to even deeper understanding. This habit of inquiry is essential for personal growth and development. It ensures that you’re not just absorbing information but actively thinking about it.

Building Stronger Relationships

Asking questions nurtures connections. Whether at work or in personal relationships, showing interest in others fosters trust and collaboration. A simple query like, "What challenges are you facing?" can strengthen bonds significantly.

Unlocking Personal and Professional Growth

Curiosity enhances self-awareness and problem-solving skills. Adopting a questioning mindset helps you navigate life's challenges more effectively, leading to greater success in various aspects of life.

In conclusion, embracing curiosity and mastering questioning techniques are essential for personal and professional growth. The habit of asking questions opens doors to innovation, creativity, and stronger relationships. Start asking questions today and watch how it transforms your understanding of the world. Remember, the only stupid question is the one you didn’t ask.

Standing Firm in Your Beliefs: Finding Strength and Confidence in Your Faith

Struggling to keep your beliefs intact when everyone around you seems to think differently? You're not alone. Many find it tough to uphold their convictions in a world filled with conflicting viewpoints. Standing firm in your beliefs is about staying true to who you are, even when it feels uncomfortable. This post explores practical steps to maintain your beliefs and navigate a sea of diverse perspectives effectively.

Where Do Beliefs Come From?

Everyone has beliefs that shape their view of the world. But where do these beliefs come from? They often arise from a mix of personal experiences. Think about moments in your life that changed how you see things. A kind act from a stranger might lead you to believe in the goodness of people. A tough situation can make you wary and cautious.

Upbringing plays a crucial role too. The values your family instills in you have a lasting impact. If you grew up in a household that valued honesty, you are likely to carry that belief into adulthood. On the other hand, if conflict and mistrust surrounded you, that might shape a more skeptical outlook.

Education is another powerful force. Schools, teachers, and friends introduce new ideas. They challenge your views and expand your thinking. A teacher who inspires you can spark a lifelong interest in a subject. Friends who share their beliefs can influence your views as well.

Collectively, these experiences, upbringing, and education create a framework for how you understand life. They connect in unique ways, shaping your beliefs and guiding your decisions. Every person’s set of beliefs is built on this foundation. Understanding the roots of your beliefs can lead to deeper insights about yourself and those around you.

Respectful Communication Strategies

When faced with disagreements, express your beliefs assertively but not aggressively.

  • Active Listening: Take a real interest in different opinions to build respect.
  • Reframing Disagreements: View conflicts as opportunities to learn instead of fights.

Handling Criticism and Opposition

Receiving criticism can sting, but it’s essential to respond constructively.  Acknowledge the feedback, thank the person, and calmly share your perspective. Research indicates that those who respond well to criticism often develop stronger relationships.

Continuous Learning and Adaptability

Being open-minded is crucial for personal growth. Embrace new information that might challenge your beliefs.

  • Changing Your Mind: Many successful people have changed their beliefs based on new evidence. Reflect on instances where you've adapted your thinking.
  • Intellectual Humility: Acknowledge that it’s okay to have doubts. Seeking to understand new perspectives can lead to deeper wisdom

Staying True to Values in Daily Life

Integrate your beliefs into daily choices. Here are some practical ways:

  • Living Your Values: Be mindful of how daily decisions align with what you believe.
  • Career Choices: Look for jobs that reflect your values and passions. Make choices that reinforce your beliefs.
  • Read my post on Being True to Yourself and Pleasing God if you haven't done so already.

The Role of Authenticity and Self-Acceptance

Aligning your actions with your beliefs is essential for developing personal integrity. When your behavior matches what you truly believe, you create a strong sense of self. Living authentically leads to significant improvements in your psychological well-being. You feel more at peace when you are true to yourself. This authenticity brings many benefits. It boosts your confidence, helping you trust your own decisions and abilities. Additionally, living in a way that reflects your true self leads to greater satisfaction in life.

To know your beliefs also means you know your identities.  Read my post Who Are You and What are Your Identities understand the role of identification in our lives.

One challenge many face is the fear of judgment from others. It is important to understand that being judged is a normal part of being honest and standing firm in your beliefs. People will have opinions, but that should not stop you from being who you really are. Instead, focus on what feels right to you. Don't overthink it - read my post on How to Stop Overthinking Every Decision you Make. Your feelings and beliefs are valid. By prioritizing your own feelings over others’ opinions, you reinforce your personal integrity and enhance your overall happiness.

Wrap-Up

Standing firm in your beliefs requires effort, but the rewards are significant. Reflect on your values, learn continuously, and connect with supportive communities. Upholding your beliefs with integrity is an ongoing journey. Apply these strategies, and let your convictions guide your path forward. Remember, true strength comes from within, and your beliefs shape who you are. Embrace your convictions and inspire those around you. Start today by reflecting on what matters most to you.

Making Time for What Truly Matters

Life is a remarkable gift, but its value often hides in plain sight. Every second we live is precious, yet how many of us truly recognize that? The way we decide to spend our time here reflects our appreciation for this gift. Saying "thank you" to life isn’t just about words; it's about actions and choices.  The screenshot to the left is what inspired this post.  Yes, something as simple as a daily email that I get reminding me to be grateful.

The preciousness of time

Every moment we have is a little treasure. Time doesn’t wait. The ticking clock reminds us that each second is unique. Once gone, it's lost forever. This understanding urges us to cherish our time and use it wisely.

Our time: A finite resource to be treasured

Unlike money, time cannot be earned back once spent. Think about it: we can't buy more hours in a day. It is crucial to see time as a limited resource. Choosing how to fill our days impacts not just our lives but also those around us.

Framing time as a gift: Setting the stage for gratitude

When we view every day as a gift, it transforms our perspective. Each sunrise presents us with a chance to express gratitude. Recognizing this opportunity fuels a more fulfilling life. It’s a way to shift from taking time for granted to treating it as a gift worth celebrating.  I wrote a blog post about expressing gratitude which you can read here.

Appreciate life more deeply

We all have an expiration date. Understanding that mortality is real helps us appreciate life more deeply. It reminds us to live not just for ourselves but for the moments that matter. Did your Mom tell you that it's better to give than to receive? I know mine did and I wrote a blog post about how it can make you feel better.

Spiritual and philosophical perspectives on life's gift

Many cultures emphasize the gift of life through various lenses. From different faiths to philosophical views, they share one common theme: life is invaluable. This perception encourages us to reflect on our existence and what we contribute to the world.  The Christian faith frequently talks about Loving Your Neighbor which is a wonderful way to live life although it might not always be easy.

Defining purpose: Aligning actions with values

What drives you? Identifying your purpose can transform your life. When your actions align with your values, every moment feels significant. Break down your passions and see how they connect with what matters most to you. I answered a question for someone on Quora recently about getting traffic to their website.  This person was told to give up on poetry as no one wants to read it.  I said to continue poetry if that's what they want to do. Here is a link to the poetry site: Heart Touching Poetry.

Identifying passions and talents: Discovering personal strengths

Everyone has unique gifts. Take the time to explore what you love. Whether it’s art, volunteering, or teaching, when you tap into your strengths, you give life meaning.  I have written several posts about establishing goals including this one.

The power of daily gratitude practices

Incorporating simple gratitude practices can uplift your life. Consider starting a gratitude journal. Write down three things you are thankful for each day. Other options include meditation and mindfulness exercises that focus on appreciation.

Expressing gratitude to others: The ripple effect of kindness

A simple "thank you" can brighten someone's day. Recognizing others' efforts fosters a culture of appreciation. Kindness is contagious. When we express gratitude to those around us, we encourage them to do the same.

Showing gratitude for challenges and setbacks

Life isn’t always smooth. Challenges can feel overwhelming, but they often teach us valuable lessons. Embrace the difficult moments as opportunities for growth. Recognizing their value strengthens our resilience.  I wrote a post about finding strength through failure which you can read here.

Creating lasting relationships: Investing in connection

Strong relationships enrich our lives. Spend time with those who matter. Share experiences, listen actively, and build memories. These connections are your support system through ups and downs.  Read this post about why friendships matter.

Leaving a positive mark on the world: Contributions beyond oneself

Consider what legacy you wish to leave. When you invest in your community and the planet, your impact can outlive you. Simple acts, like planting trees or advocating for change, leave lasting impressions that inspire others.

Finding fulfillment in the journey: Embracing the present moment

Life is about the journey, not just the destination. Find joy in daily activities. Whether it's enjoying nature, sharing laughter with loved ones, or pursuing hobbies, embracing the present fosters a richer experience

Final thoughts

Reflect on how you spend your time. What changes can you make to live more intentionally? Start today by expressing gratitude in your life, and you'll find greater fulfillment. The power of gratitude and purpose can shape your life. By recognizing time as a gift, you create a legacy of appreciation. Live fully, love deeply, and express your thanks for every moment.

Fix Your Attitude: Overcoming Negativity Day by Day

scripture
Last week was really rough despite two vacation days one of which included a massage.  My husband had to travel for work.  He decided to extend the trip by leaving early to visit family. It snowed the day he left and I'd gotten up at 5:30 AM to do snow removal.  By afternoon, I was exhausted and allowed myself to take a nap.

The first full day he was gone involved grocery shopping.  I arrived at the grocery store to find out that three quarters of the coolers were down so I could not buy some of the items that Jon had instructed me to buy.  I bought what I could reminding myself that the cooler issue was beyond my control.

I'll make a long story short; the laundry, cooking, snow removal, other assorted chores along with writing, Crossfit, and my full-time job left me exhausted with a short-fuse. During a phone conversation, he mentioned he has another business trip at the end of March.  He hadn't even gotten home yet!  I was livid when I went to bed the night he dropped that bomb on me and I slept like garbage.

Negative attitudes can drag you down. Imagine facing a tough day but being stuck in a spiral of pessimism. Your reactions to challenges shape your experiences, which is why changing your mindset can transform your life.

Identifying Negative Thought Patterns

Negative thoughts often slip into our minds without us noticing. Many people experience cognitive distortions, like over-generalizing or catastrophizing. In fact, studies show that about 70% of adults struggle with negative thinking at some point. Recognizing these patterns is the first step in shifting your mindset. I had fallen into the trap of "stinking thinking" which I've written previously; click here to read that post.

Assessing Your Reactions

Reactions can be automatic and often unhelpful. Think about a time when you reacted negatively to a simple situation—maybe a friend didn't text back right away, and you spiraled into thinking they were mad at you. This kind of reaction can strain relationships. Identifying these habits is crucial for growth.

The Impact of Limiting Beliefs

Limiting beliefs act like invisible chains that hold you back. They can make you feel unworthy or incapable. Breaking these beliefs can unlock your potential.  I've endured hard times before and those times can help us increase our faith. You can read more in this post.

Practicing Gratitude

Gratitude can change your perspective. Regularly reflecting on what you’re thankful for can boost your mood and overall well-being. Try keeping a gratitude journal. Write down three things you appreciate each day to help shift your focus.

Reframing Negative Thoughts

Reframing involves challenging negative thoughts and replacing them with positive ones. For example, instead of thinking "I can't do this," say "I can learn to do this." A person who practices reframing often experiences less anxiety and more confidence. I've written about changing negative thoughts and how to replace them to be more joyful.

Self-Compassion and Acceptance

Being kind to yourself is vital. Accepting your imperfections can help foster a more positive attitude. My AA sponsor regularly tells me to be gentle with myself and I lose sight of this when I am overwhelmed.  I wrote about the power of being gentle with oneself and you can read it here

Emotional Regulation Techniques

Managing emotions is key to better reactions. Techniques like deep breathing can help you calm down when faced with stress. Taking a moment to breathe can shift your response from impulsive to thoughtful.  I did continue my prayer practice during this rough time because, as I've written, we should Pray about everything!

Ask for Support

Being assertive means expressing your needs without being disrespectful. Clear communication can improve relationships and foster mutual understanding. I cannot talk to my husband when he's not here but, next time, I should ask for his understanding should I fall behind on chores.

Wrap-up

Changing your attitude, approach, mindset, and reactions can significantly improve your life. Focus on understanding your current thoughts and behaviors, cultivating positivity, modifying your approach, practicing mindfulness, and altering your reactions. Embrace this journey of personal transformation. Each small change leads to a more fulfilling life. Your path toward a brighter future starts now.

The Power of Prayer: Finding Guidance and Peace When You Feel Lost

Feeling lost and unfulfilled despite achieving success is common. Many people find it hard to match their accomplishments with how they truly feel inside. It's easy to focus on worldly goals like promotions, wealth, or social status. However, chasing these things can sometimes distract us from what really matters on a deeper level.

Recognizing misplaced priorities is the first step in reconnecting with your true self. It can be easy to get caught up in the race for success, pushing aside our spiritual needs and personal values. When achievements feel hollow, it might signal that something is missing from our lives.

Seeking guidance from a higher power can provide clarity and direction. Whether through prayer, meditation, or contemplation, tapping into a source of wisdom can help in understanding one's purpose. This connection often brings peace and insight that worldly success cannot offer.

Realigning your life with a greater purpose can lead to a more fulfilling existence. Identifying what truly matters, such as relationships, personal growth, or contributing to a cause, can bring joy and satisfaction. Taking the time to assess your life can help you shift your focus back to what nurtures your spirit and aligns with your values.

This journey toward a more meaningful life is essential for genuine happiness. When the noise of external achievements fades, you can hear your inner voice guiding you towards fulfillment. This article will explore these ideas further, helping you navigate the path back to a life filled with purpose and contentment.

Spiritual Emptiness

Prioritizing material gain over spiritual growth may leave a void. Scripture reminds us in Matthew 6:19-21, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth…” Focusing solely on what we earn instead of what we learn can lead to a hollow existence.

YouVersion Scripture Image

Prayer and Meditation

Effective prayer connects us to God. Sit in a quiet space, focus on your breath, and speak your heart. Journaling can help. Write down what you’re struggling with or thankful for. Set aside time every day.  I'm not so good about journaling but I do try to stop for prayer breaks, especially when I am frustrated.

Scripture Study

The Bible offers insight and direction. Psalms 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.” Focus on passages that resonate with you. Reflect on how they apply to your life.  The "Daily Refresh" in the YouVersion Bible app makes studying and learning scripture manageable.

Practicing Gratitude

Cultivating a mindset of appreciation can significantly impact your daily life. At the end of each day, take a moment to reflect on your experiences. Write down three specific blessings you encountered throughout the day. This simple yet powerful practice shifts your focus from what you lack to what you have. It encourages you to recognize the abundance present in your life, no matter how small.

Many people rush through their days and forget to pause and appreciate the good things. I'm one of those people some days! Making this a daily habit can train your mind to look for positives, even during tough times. Sometimes, I try to remember to do this every day, but I often forget to jot them down. Even so, the effort to acknowledge blessings can foster gratitude and create a more positive outlook. Embracing this practice regularly can lead to a happier and more fulfilling life.

Trusting in God's Timing

God's plan unfolds in His own time, not ours. Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us, "To everything there is a season." It's important to trust the journey and be patient. A popular saying about patience tells us that it's not just about waiting; it’s about how we act while we wait.

As a project manager, I am responsible for schedules, timelines, budgets, and resources. This constant focus on control often leads me to struggle with the idea of "God's Will not Mine." Each day presents a challenge in surrendering my plans for something greater.

Daily Spiritual Practices

Creating a consistent daily routine is essential for setting a positive tone for each day. Start your morning with just 10 minutes of prayer. This brief but meaningful time can help you focus your thoughts and intentions. After praying, take a few moments for meditation. This practice allows you to clear your mind, center your thoughts, and connect deeper with yourself. Following meditation, engage in scripture reading. This can provide inspiration and guidance, helping to shape your mindset for the day ahead.

For several years now, I have made it a habit to begin each day with prayer and Bible study. I use the YouVersion Bible app for this purpose. This simple routine has made a significant impact on my mornings. It helps me approach my day with a sense of peace and purpose. The combination of prayer, meditation, and scripture reading equips me to face daily challenges with confidence and clarity. Whether it's dealing with stress, making decisions, or nurturing relationships, starting my day in this way truly helps me get it right from the start.

Surrounding Yourself with Faith

Build relationships with those who share your beliefs. A supportive community uplifts and encourages. Look for groups or gatherings that resonate with your journey.  My spirituality grew, not at church, but in the rooms of AA.  This is not to say that the years I spent going to church were a waste.  My years at church were stressful if I'm to be very honest.  I spent years dragging my husband and son out the door for 8:30 AM mass.  I spent years shoe-horning in every program or volunteer opportunity to church felt I should do.  After the pandemic, I did not return to mass, rather, I chose to attend AA.  The women's group that I'm part of now is low key yet so beneficial to my life and sobriety.

In closing, identifying misplaced priorities and seeking divine guidance are vital steps for a more meaningful life. Realigning your life with God's plan is a journey of faith and perseverance. Take action today by reflecting on your priorities. Actively seek God's direction, and embrace the path laid before you. Your journey toward fulfillment starts now.  How are YOU going to seek His guidance in your life?

The Types of Rest You Need for Optimal Well-being

Many adults experience physical or emotional symptoms due to stress. This reality highlights the essential role that rest plays in maintaining our health. Rest is not just a simple pause; it is crucial for both our bodies and minds. Without sufficient rest, we can feel overwhelmed and exhausted.

Different types of rest exist, each serving a unique purpose. Many people fail to recognize the importance of these various kinds of rest. It’s easy to think that a few hours of sleep is enough, but true restoration requires more than that.

Understanding and acknowledging the types of rest we need can lead to better overall well-being. Each type addresses specific areas of our physical and mental health. By integrating these forms of rest into our lives, we can recharge our energy levels and improve our ability to handle daily challenges.

These restorative practices not only help us to feel better but also enhance our capacity for success in various aspects of life. Exploring the nine types of rest can provide valuable insights into how to optimize our health and achieve a more balanced lifestyle.

Physical Rest

Physical rest is essential for maintaining good health. One of the key components of physical rest is the quality of sleep. Good sleep hygiene includes habits that promote uninterrupted and restorative sleep. This means having a regular sleep schedule, creating a comfortable sleep environment, and avoiding screens before bedtime. Studies show that not getting enough sleep can cause serious health problems. For example, sleep deprivation has been linked to obesity, anxiety, and heart disease.

In addition to proper sleep, nutrition plays a vital role in physical rest. A balanced diet provides the body with the nutrients it needs to recover and function well. Eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can enhance overall well-being.

Regular physical activity is another important factor. Exercise helps to reduce stress and promotes better sleep. It can also improve mood and energy levels, contributing to a more restful experience. Incorporating these elements into your daily routine can significantly enhance the quality of your rest, leading to better health outcomes. Prioritizing sleep, nutrition, and exercise will help in achieving a state of physical well-being necessary for a healthier life.

Mental Rest

Mental rest differs from relaxation. Constant mental stimulation leads to fatigue. Activities that demand focus, such as work or studying, can drain mental energy. To restore this energy, you need mental breaks.  Ways to take mental rest:

  • Practice mindfulness meditation: Research shows it can lower stress levels.
  • Take nature walks: Spending time outdoors refreshes the mind.
  • Disconnect from technology: Limit screen time to allow your brain to rest.

Sensory Rest

Sensory overload occurs when your senses are bombarded with stimuli. Everyday life—involving loud noises, bright screens, and crowded spaces—creates a need for sensory rest.  I struggle with crowds.  I much prefer smaller groups.

I struggle with limiting screen time or taking a break from tech to be very honest. Some ways to encourage sensory rest are:
  • Dim the lights in your home.
  • Use soft fabrics and soothing colors.
  • Spend time in quiet spaces: This reduces the noise and distractions around you.
  • Limit screen time before bed: Create a digital sunset to ease into sleep.

Emotional Rest

Emotional rest is crucial for emotional regulation. It allows you to process feelings without becoming overwhelmed. Ignoring emotions can lead to burnout.

  • Journaling: Write about your feelings to organize thoughts and gain perspective.
  • Talk to a therapist: Professional support can enhance emotional processing.
  • Engage in self-compassion: Treat yourself with kindness, especially in tough times.

Creative Rest

Creativity can become depleted. When you’re always creating, you can feel drained. To replenish creative energies, intentional breaks are necessary.  I have struggled with this after creating this blog.  Initially, I wanted to post six days per week but I have scaled that back because of time constraints with my full-time job but also to give my creativity a rest. I want this blog to have valuable content.  Do these for creative rest:

  • Pursue hobbies: Try activities unrelated to your work.
  • Engage in creative expression: Explore art, writing, or music.

Social Rest

Social interactions, while enjoyable, can be exhausting. Everyone needs a break from constant social activity.

  • Set boundaries: Learn to say no to social obligations.
  • Prioritize solitude: Spend time alone to recharge.

Many people find that taking occasional breaks from social settings leads to a more fulfilling social life.  I love my family but I do enjoy quiet Saturdays when everyone is at work or a scouting event and it is just me with my cat Patty.

I am working to set boundaries which you can read about in this post.

Spiritual Rest

Spiritual rest nourishes the soul. It connects you to a greater sense of purpose and meaning in life.

I start every day with prayer and scripture study.  In the afternoon, I take a short break for meditation. If I'm scrolling social media and a friend asks for prayer, I stop and say a short prayer.

Mental Restoration

Engaging in tasks that challenge your brain can lead to mental restoration. Activities like problem-solving or skill learning stimulate your mind while allowing it to recharge.

I found "Zen Color" which is a tablet based coloring app and I absolutely love it.  I also enjoy reading various genres of books.

Purposeful Rest

Purposeful rest differs from passive rest. It involves engaging in meaningful activities that fulfill you.

  • Volunteering: Helping others can provide a sense of purpose.
  • Engaging in meaningful work: Focus on projects that align with your values.
I found that I had to take a step back in this area.  I was on the board of a non-profit that helps individuals who do not qualify for other assistance programs. The work of the group is fantastic but it was too much for my schedule. The board meetings conflict with my women's group so I stepped down as I feel the women's group is more important.  If you find yourself in a similar situation, know that it is is OK to say "no" to volunteer work.

Wrap-Up

Understanding these nine types of rest is vital for your overall well-being. From physical to purposeful rest, each type serves an important function. Prioritizing rest can improve both mental and physical health significantly. In fact, individuals who practice a balanced approach to rest experience greater life satisfaction and productivity. Identify where you may be deficient in rest and start implementing these strategies today. Your mind and body will thank you.

From Dreams to Wins: How Goal-Setting Transforms Life

scripture
Setting goals isn’t just about checking boxes or filling in planners — it’s about creating a life you’re excited to wake up to. When you work toward something meaningful, your days take on a new rhythm. Suddenly, even small victories feel like fireworks. That little spark of accomplishment fuels your motivation, pushing you to dream even bigger and reach even higher.

But here’s the best part: goals aren’t just about motivation. They give your life structure. They help you manage your time, choose what matters most, and gracefully say “no” to the distractions that pull you off course. You become more focused, less stressed, and more efficient — all while feeling good about the direction you’re heading.

And when you share your goals with others? Magic happens. You create accountability. You invite support. You give your friends and family a reason to cheer you on when things get tough. Suddenly, your goals aren’t just yours — they’re a team effort.

In short, setting personal goals brings clarity, energy, and joy. They give you direction, help you stay on track, and — most importantly — make life feel more fulfilling.

Step 1: Identify What Matters Most

Before you set a single goal, you need to know yourself. Your goals should reflect your deepest values and passions. Ask yourself:

  • What makes me feel most alive?

  • What principles guide my choices?

  • Where do I want to be in five years?

For me, I don’t always plan far into the future. Most of my goals are rooted in health and fitness, so they tend to align with the short-term objectives of my training program. Still, even in the short term, aligning goals with what matters to you makes them far more powerful.

Step 2: Break Big Goals into Bite-Sized Wins

Big dreams can feel overwhelming. That’s why breaking them into smaller, manageable steps is key.

If your dream is to write a book, start with one chapter a month. If your goal is to improve strength, start with one new lift a week.

Right now, I was considering adding a strength class to my 4 weekly CrossFit sessions. After chatting with a coach, I learned about January’s extra-credit programming (bench press + jump rope). So instead, I’m dedicating one open gym session a week to work on those weaknesses. Same progress, but in a way that feels doable with my schedule.

Step 3: Anticipate Obstacles Before They Happen

Every journey has roadblocks. The trick is to see them coming. Write them down and brainstorm strategies in advance.

Sometimes, obstacles aren’t just physical or time-related — they’re about boundaries. I’ve learned I need to set expectations at home to protect my time and focus. (I wrote more about that in Overcoming Guilt When Setting Personal Boundaries.)

Step 4: Build Habits That Keep You Going

Goals aren’t reached through bursts of motivation — they’re achieved through consistent habits.

At our gym, the coaches check in if they haven’t seen someone in a while. It’s not about guilt; it’s about care. Whether you’ve been on vacation or just struggling to show up, they want to help if you’re open to it. That kind of support can keep your momentum going when your own motivation dips.

Use habit trackers, set reminders, and create rewards for sticking with your routines. Small daily wins stack up over time.

Step 5: Review, Adjust, and Learn

Regular check-ins are essential. I use the Wodify app to track my workout data — it helps me see where I’m improving and where I might need a tweak.

And yes, some days are total workout fails. That’s okay. I just ask, “Why?” Maybe I didn’t sleep well, ate something that didn’t sit right, or had a stressful day. Or maybe… it’s just one of those days. The important thing is learning from it and moving forward.

Step 6: Celebrate Every Win

Never underestimate the power of celebration — big or small. At my CrossFit gym, we celebrate each other constantly. Hitting a PR? Finishing a tough WOD? Showing up when you didn’t feel like it? It’s all worth a high-five (or ten).

Surrounding yourself with supportive people makes success feel even sweeter.

The Takeaway

Goal-setting is more than a productivity hack — it’s a way to live with purpose. When you know yourself, break big dreams into small steps, anticipate challenges, build solid habits, and celebrate along the way, you set yourself up for a life of growth and joy.

So here’s your challenge: write down one goal you want to achieve. Then break it into clear, actionable steps. Your future self will be so glad you started today.

Thyroid Problems? Could It Be Something Else?

After watching "Day in the Life" on YouTube with Sara Sigmondsdottir and her battle to overcome an autoimmune condition, I began reading, Medical Medium Thyroid Healing: The Truth behind Hashimoto's, Graves', Insomnia, Hypothyroidism, Thyroid Nodules & Epstein-Barr.

I'm not even halfway through the book. Still, I've started making changes. These changes are based on what I've read so far. I'm also looking ahead to the sections on healing foods. Posts on Threads from Medical Medium are also a guide. Making my own green juices would be ideal. Sadly, I just don't have the time for that right now. I've found some good alternatives. Bolthouse Farm makes a tasty Immunity Blend. Simple Truth also offers some green juice options. I pour about 6 ounces into a small juice glass. I drink this green juice each morning. I'm trying to eat more fruits and vegetables, too. Pomegranate seeds are a great addition. I mix them into salads for a bit of sweetness. They also add flavor to ground turkey and rice dishes. I've also been snacking on dates. These are in addition to apples and bananas, my usual fruits. I was surprised recently when I checked my weight. I had lost 4 pounds! I don't focus too much on the scale. However, I do check my weight now and then.

I'm not forcing vegetables on my family. I simply offer a vegetable side with meals. I keep a large container of mixed greens and spinach in the fridge. I've been adding this to my meals, too. I recently made a chicken wrap. I used leftover chicken and a wheat tortilla. Then I stuffed it with the mixed greens. It was a simple and healthy meal.

The book is pretty interesting so far. Anthony William, the author, says many sicknesses are really from a thyroid virus. This virus, he believes, comes from Epstein-Barr. Doctors often blame other things. He thinks early perimenopause or menopause are often misdiagnosed. Women might be told they're starting menopause. But really, the Epstein-Barr virus could be the culprit. It attacks the thyroid, causing problems. These problems mimic menopause symptoms. So, women get the wrong treatment. They don't realize the real issue is a virus. This virus can cause fatigue and hormone issues. These issues are also linked to the thyroid.

I've written about my menopause diagnosis. Based on the fact that I've not had a period since my gynecologist took me off hormonal birth control is a good sign that this next phase of womanhood is accurate and that I have not been mis-diagnosed.  I will see my doctor later this week and I will explain what I've been doing as far as the green juice.  I've also been working to increase my protein as she recommended back in October.

I am just a blogger.  If you are experiencing any medical concerns, please reach out to your doctor or another medical professional. My post is sharing my experience as well as Sara's experience if you happen to watch the video that I linked to this post.

Winter Weather Heightens Worry, Anxiety and Driving Concerns

If you are a regular reader of my blog, you know that I battle with worry and anxiety.  I also have driving jitters when the weather is sunny and dry.

Once you add snow and ice into the mix, my worry, anxiety and driving concerns go into overdrive.  As a child I was taught to fear the weather.  My birthday is in February and during a snowstorm, I threw a hissy fit about possibly not having a birthday cake.  My mom went out in the elements and bought everything to make sure I had a birthday cake.  Her mom, my late Grandma Irene, called to wish me a "Happy Birthday" but she also gave me a stern talking to for making my mom feel guilty and going out to into the bad weather.

Our family's response was to stay home during bad weather except for my dad who was the family breadwinner and often was called into work early to care for the boiler and to care for the sidewalks as part of his maintenance man role.

As I'm writing this, we are in the midst of a winter storm. The county that I live in is under a Level 2 snow emergency which means you really shouldn't go out unless you have to.  I'm not sure how much snow other than if I'd worn my ankle boots when I went out with the snow blower, I would have had snow in my boots.  I am have grateful to be working remotely today.  I put in a request to work remotely tomorrow as I suspect additional time will be needed to clear up the roads.

I had a friend poke fun at a recent post on Instagram of my pre-storm grocery haul.  She thought it was funny that I bought so much food for 2 inches of snow.  We definitely have gotten over 2 inches of snow plus none of the food that I bought will go to waste I have four adults living in my house right now.  My next shopping trip might be "produce only" since I stocked up before the snow storm we're in.

Some might say that I have an unhealthy fear of winter weather. I won't agree or disagree.  I do not blame my parents for instilling a fear of winter weather either. I am working to lean on and trust in God but it's taking time to overcome my winter weather fears.

Love Your Neighbor as Yourself: Ideas for Building Stronger Communities

Imagine walking through your neighborhood, noticing small gestures of kindness. A neighbor helps another carry groceries, someone cleans up a local park, and kids play together across ages. These actions create a ripple effect, enhancing community spirit.

"Love your neighbor as yourself" isn't just a saying; it’s a principle found in many cultures and religions, including Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism. This guide explores how to apply this timeless wisdom in modern life, promoting compassion and unity.

"Love Your Neighbor" in current times

Defining "Neighbor"

The term "neighbor" goes beyond physical proximity. It includes everyone around us—friends, coworkers, and even those we interact with online.

The Reciprocal Nature of Love

Neighborly kindness creates a cycle of goodwill. When we show love, we often receive it back, enhancing our own mental health. Studies reveal that helping others boosts happiness, reinforcing the benefits of community love.

Practical Ways to Show Love to Your Neighbor

Simple actions speak volumes. Consider:

  • Volunteering at local shelters or food banks.
  • Helping elderly neighbors with chores or errands.
  • Holding open doors
  • Giving a kind smile

We have a sweet elderly gentleman who lives next door to us and when we have snow storms, I will use the snow blower to clear his sidewalk.  I already have it out to clear our walks so why not?

Conflicts are inevitable. Establishing strategies to resolve disagreements is essential. Techniques like open dialogues and community mediation promote healing and cooperation.  We a homeowners association in our neighborhood and I roll my eyes at many of the posts in our Facebook group. I choose to ignore them and move on.

Community involvement can also lead to better environmental practices. Some communities have clean-up days.  Our does not but my if trash day falls on a windy day and there are boxes and stuff blowing down the street, we pick them up.  We ended up with a recycle bin full of beer cans one day!  I'm a recovering alcoholic and I know those cans were no from our family but leaving them rolling around in the street would have been wrong.

Building loving communities requires ongoing effort. It’s not just a one-time act; it’s a lifestyle choice. Consistent kindness fosters deep connections over time.

Wrap-Up

Loving your neighbor as yourself is an essential principle that can transform our communities. By taking small steps and leading by example, we can foster kindness and compassion daily. Each act of generosity, no matter how small, helps create a stronger bond among us. As we engage actively and commit to neighborly love, we contribute to a brighter future. Choose kindness today and inspire others to do the same. Your actions can make a difference.

Being True to Yourself and Pleasing God

This blog focuses on discussing challenging topics or situations that many people face. I want to set clearer and more specific goals for the year 2025. So far, I have begun outlining my ideas and strategies to achieve these objectives. I aim to tackle various subject matters that resonate with my audience and offer insights that can help them navigate their own challenges. As I continue this journey, I will refine my goals to ensure they are realistic and impactful. My plan is to share my progress and encourage my readers to think about their own aspirations as well.

I need to establish boundaries which I wrote about in this post. I am still trying to figure out what the boundaries need to be.

For the last year, I've had regular occurring conflicts on Sundays.  I prayed a lot, asking for God's guidance to choose between the two. I finally came to a decision.  I expect that I have disappointed people but I aim to please God not people. I wrote about sharing scripture and people pleasing in this post.  I feel at peace with the decision that I made and felt a heavy weight lifted when I released myself from the conflict.

I started writing a book in late 2024 and I am finalizing it. I talked with someone at the Plain City Writing group about my book and my publishing plans to get some feedback and direction.  I continue to pray about if and when I move forward with publication.

I have one fitness goal so far and that is to work on box jumps. This is a carryover from 2024 as I did not work on it until late in the year.  While I've been able to do box jumps with a 6 inch box during open gym with no one or limited persons around, I freeze when I think about doing them in a class setting.  I have talked with friends about this and it is a mental block that I need to work through.  Once we get into our program focuses for 2025, I believe I will be able to establish more fitness goals.

Most of all, I want to be honest when it comes to my goals.  In an article by Desiring God - Be True to Yourself, there is a theme about honesty. I've linked to the article should you wish to read it.  We need to humble ourselves and let God's will work on our lives.

"1 Peter 5:6 (ESV): 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you"

Trusting God to guide your actions and decisions can lead you to achieve your true goals. When you allow His work in and through you, your aspirations align with His purpose. This alignment brings peace and fulfillment, knowing you are on the right path. Remember, your journey is not just about reaching goals; it's about growing in faith. Embrace this collaboration with God and watch how your life transforms. Take a moment to reflect on your goals. Are they in line with His will?

The folks at Truth Applied wrote an article about this which was part of a four week study.  I would encourage you to read it as it goes into far more detail that I will here. They broke it down into:

First Love
First Serve
First Forgive
First Pray

The scripture I chose, Matthew 22:37, centers on the concept of Love. This form of love is not simply a feeling but a conscious choice and a deep commitment. It raises an important question: Who should be the primary focus of our love? The answer is clear; our love should be directed toward the Lord, our God. The term “Lord” signifies our Master, while “God” refers to our most sacred Creator, the one who brought everything into existence.

Giving our all to Him means fully dedicating ourselves. This involves our thoughts, feelings, and emotions. It is not enough to love in words alone; our commitment must reflect in our daily lives and our actions. When we engage with the Word of God through study and reflection, we deepen our understanding and strengthen our ability to serve Him.

By focusing our minds on His teachings, we align our thoughts and intentions with His will. This connection paves the way for a more profound relationship with God. It empowers us to express our love not just in prayer but in how we treat others and navigate the world. Loving God with our entire being transforms our lives. It roots us firmly in faith and guides us through life’s challenges. When we prioritize our love for God, we cultivate a sense of purpose and fulfillment that extends beyond ourselves.

I am not professionally trained in the study of God's Word.  I am just a gal who wants to learn more so I seek out resources and use the YouVersion Bible app to guide me in studying and learning about the Word of God.  I use this blog to help further our understanding of God's Word and how it can be applied to our daily lives. God loves us and he wants us to extend that love to others.

Slow Down to Love: Finding Sensitivity in a Hurried World

We live in a world that glorifies busyness. From the moment we open our eyes in the morning, our minds start racing through a list of thing...
